Berlin is one of my favourite cities in Europe...I have many favourites...but Berlin doesn't compete with the others in the same way...it has a unique energy unlike any other...on my first trip there some 12 years ago, much to my surprise many of the great museums and sights were still under repair...the feeling one gets when you run your hand along the huge marble pillar and feel the holes and crevasses from the damage of war time,is so chilling and powerful its hard for it not to deeply affect you. I stayed with a friend in the former east side back then, and describing the East was somewhat like trying to explain the difference between black and brown coloured lenses...The derelict buildings had a haunting charm, over grown parks and progressive coffee bars have long since made way for the trendy and gentrified chic-ness that is Prenzlauer Berg. Berlin is enigmatic and anybody can find their tribe there...Its a breath of fresh air from some of the other German cities I've lived in...it's grittier, its more creative and bohemian, its broke and its alive!...And it's home to some of the best flea markets and vintage bric-a-brac markets I've ever found...Kingdom opened its doors with some gorgeous pieces, all the way from this very special city.
Paris....ohhh Paris in the Spring time!...(and we got sunshine too) Meeting my dear friend and Business partner in Paris and spending a girls weekend like two Frenchies was a dream come true! We booked a variety of Airbnb apartments in the nichè burrows we wanted to discover and walked and looked and saw...Paris is exactly what you dream it will be, its gorgeous! Charming cobbled streets winded, with boutiques and coffee shops and patisseries, flower sellers on corners of art Nouveau book shops and river side teens picnicking and dancing in the late sunlight. The art and architecture cease to amaze, let alone the style of the french taking lunch in trendy sidewalk cafes....Paris is where Kingdom was conceived in a way, its where the very first inspirations came from...We would discuss for hours 'what would Kingdom be or say? What would it feel like or speak off?...Going to the Helmut Newton exhibition, discovering Vintage bric-a-brac markets and window shopping in young up and coming neighbourhoods till our little hearts content was all about planting those seeds for our future shop in Cape Town.
